Angelique Kerber won all-No.1 clash against Maria Sharapova. Most expected Mallorca Open 2019 match was followed by 2.800 spectators in Country Club Santa Ponsa centre court stands. German has beat russian in straight (6-2 6-3) after an hour and 31 minutes match advancing to quarterfinals.

Kerber started strong breaking her opponent at first game. Sharapova wasted three re-break points in the second and another one at fourth (3-1). Also six double faults in whole match erased five-times Grand Slam champion chances after double break down in seventh (5-2).

Sharapova started leading the second set but, after first game, Kerber took advantatge breaking her in third and seventh game (5-2). Russian tried to stay in the match taking one of two breaks down but she ended giving ninth game and the match (6-3).

Mallorca Open 2019 top-seeded reaches for first time the last-eight round in Santa Ponsa converting her record to 2-1. It is sixth time this season that Wimbledon defending-champions arrives to quarterfinals. Kerber advanced in Doha (semifinals), Indian Wells (runner-up) and Monterrey (semifinals).

Full stands

Centro court stands were full like also all Country Club Santa Ponsa. Tickets office closed at midday after sold out the 2.800 available seats. In fact Mallorca Open 2019 edition caused great excitement having three former World No. 1 who won ten Grand Slam titles: Maria Sharapova (5), Angelique Kerber (3) and Viktoria Azarenka (2).

On the other hand, el Mallorca Open attracted tennis fans who also support players who has repeat her appearence in Santa Ponsa how Caroline Garcia, 2016 champion, and also Anastasija Sevastova, 2017 winner and runner-up in all-three tournament previous editions.
