The most awaited come back in the WTA circuit already has a date and place. After more than a week training in Mallorca, Maria Sharapova has decided to accept the wild card offered by the Mallorca Open and will play her first tournament since last February, when she underwent cirugy due to a shoulder injury.

“I am happy to announce that I will be accepting the wild card to play the Mallorca Open”, says the 32 years old Russian player. “Thank you to the tournament for the opportunity and to all my amazing fans for the support in the last four months”.

With this “yes” of Sharapova, there will be three former world number ones that will be playing the fourth edition of the Mallorca Open. Angelique Kerber, current champion of Wimbledon and Victoria Mallorca Open Lawn Tennis Club.

Toni Nadal, tournament’s director, is tremendously satisfied to have the best draw in the history of the tournament: “As the tournament director of the Mallorca Open and as a born Mallorcan, I love being able to welcome the topstars of the tennis world like Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber and Viktoria Azarenka to this WTA tournament that takes place on our beautiful island.”

Edwin Weindorfer, CEO und founder of E|motion Group is extremely happy to welcome the best draw of players in the tournament´s short but successful history, “It is a milestone in the short history of our event. I am extremely happy to have Maria Sharapova playing in Mallorca, she is one of the world stars in sports history”.

Anisimova, the revelation of Roland Garros, will also be in Mallorca

Two have been the big names of this edition of Roland Garros in the women’s draw. On the one hand, the champion Ashley Barty, and on the other, Amanda Anisimova. The American player, just 17 years old, has surprised everyone by showing a great tennis in Paris that helped her defeat, among other players, the defending champion, the Romanian Simona Halep. Anisimova arrived into the semifinals and only one great Barty could defeat her in three very tough sets.

Many are the voices that compare the young New Jersey player with Maria Sharapova. The Russian player won her first Grand Slam by winning Wimbledon with only 17 years, the same age at which Anisimova has managed to sneak into the semis of Roland Garros. The American player has already achieved her first title in the circuit this year. It was at the WTA International in Bogotá last April.
