The Mallorca Open 2018 started full of surprises. Lara Arruabarrena was the protagonist of the Spanish derby, as she beat Carla Suárez Navarro in a great match by the ‘tolosarra’.

Arruabarrena took the win by 6-4 and 7-6 (4) in a clash in which he won just one point more than the player from the Canary Islands, fifth favorite in the tournament played in Santa Ponsa, Calvià.

The connection between Germany and Mallorca became evident when Tatjana Maria competed like if it was at home. The 30 years old German player won the fourth seed Anett Kontaveit in a great comeback that stretched by hour and 49 minutes, winning by 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3.

Maria managed to turn the match around miraculously, as she was 3-6 and 2-4 on the scoreboard before starting a perfect comeback.

The first winner of the day on the main draw was the aussie Samantha Stosur. The US Open champion in 2011 started strongly against Marketa Vondrousova, beat the Czech 6-2 and 7-5 in hour and 38 minutes.

The Australian managed to close the match in two sets despite going 2-5 in the second set. Without losing faith or concentration.

Another Grand Slam champion at the helm was Francesca Schiavone, who despite her characteristic resilience and determination, could not avoid falling to Carina Witthoeft in two hours and 25 minutes of the match, without a doubt one of the most disputed duels of the day.
