There are still several weeks left, but everything is ready for the third edition of the Mallorca Open. The goal? Make it the best edition in the event’s history. Here are five reasons not to miss the WTA tennis tournament played on the island.
1. Grass courts made by Wimbledon
The tournament was held for the first time in 2016 on the courts of the Santa Ponsa Country Club and stands out as a unique event in Spain because it is the only one played on grass, a very special and iconic surface. In Mallorca, this grass has Wimbledon’s supervision, possibly the most prestigious and recognized tennis tournament in the world. Therefore, the event must meet the quality standards of Wimbledon, which oversees the development and care of the courts.
2. Former world No.1 in action
Angelique Kerber, former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, will be the main attraction of the 2018 poster. The German player has confirmed her participation in the tournament, becoming one of the main stars of this year’s field. “I am really looking forward to play the Mallorca Open 2018,” said Kerber. “I love the island and the beautiful grass courts in Santa Ponsa, where I was able to prepare for Wimbledon last year. I am looking forward to meeting the tennis fans on the island.”
3. The Nadal influence
In 2017 Toni Nadal took over a new role and became Mallorca Open’s Tournament Director. During the first edition he supported the organization with his know-how and experience in the tennis world and has worked as an advisor and collaborator. In addition, Rafael Nadal himself used the perfect grass courts last year to practice for a week with the aim of preparing his attempt at Wimbledon, causing the delight of fans who came every day to follow his practice sessions.
4. Tennis for all
The next edition is marked by the effort of the organization to provide elite women’s tennis throughout the island. For this, the Mallorca Open has tickets that can be purchased from 18 euros. In addition, during the next weeks, different promotions will be made to lower the cost of the tickets.
5. A little party never hurt nobody
The Mallorca Open is not just a sports event. Another great goal of the organizers is to turn the tournament into a social event, making each day a party with different events scheduled to bring closer the public of all ages and also make a social use of the club’s facilities.
